Electromechanical Technician Program Overview

"As an Inside Sales Specialist sourcing and quoting nuclear utilities in Canada and around the world for electromechanical parts, I selected this program to get more insights into the daily operations we run within our lab,” says Shayan.

“This program provided the perfect 'free flow' structure, that could blend into my schedule. I particularly liked the Student Resource Center for support as they are very helpful and does a great job of explaining things when you get stuck on. I walked away with a much stronger foundational understanding of the relays, potentiometers, and fuses that move through our facility every day," he adds.

Benjamin Bupamba is an Aviation Security Officer at G4S Secure Solutions. He first learned about the Electromechanical Technician program ‘through my wife who is a post-graduate alumnus of George Brown College. I selected this program because it aligned with my career goals, offered practical skills, and was recommended.’

‘The practical exercises, the Support teams expertise and help, along with the online resources were aspects of the program I liked best.’

Abdullah Bakare (I am) is a process engineer at Bunge, a renowned global leader in the processing of edible oils. My role involves optimizing processes related to the extraction, refining, bleaching, and deodorization of seed oils. I also manage significant projects within the facility focused on process improvement.

I enrolled in the Electromechanical Technician program, to enhance my knowledge of electrical components and systems. My primary objective was the desire to collaborate more effectively with electricians responsible for troubleshooting during process failures and outages. A recommendation from an alumnus of GBC led me to the Electronics program.

I particularly enjoyed the Circuitlogix software and computer-simulated labs, which deepened my understanding of the concepts covered in each module. I also appreciated the program's structure, where key concepts like DC and AC motors were introduced early on, allowing me to grasp these subjects before delving into related modules later in the course.

The Electromechanical program has significantly enhanced my ability to comprehend the electrical aspects of my projects, including line diagrams, control drawings, and verification of items against the electrical code. This has improved my interactions with on-site electricians during troubleshooting. Moreover, I feel more confident in exploring advanced topics such as PLCs and PLC programming in the future.

Nanthakumar Mahalingasivam is a Maintenance Technician at Canada Post. He was looking for training that would ‘build my skill set and resume’ and decided on the George Brown College’s Electromechanical program recommended by his co-worker. 

He felt the ‘program curriculum aligns with my current job position so will likely use all the concepts taught in my daily work. ‘I have more confidence in my job than I did before’ and he hopes it will lead to a promotion.

Deogracias Alfonso is an Industrial Maintenance Mechanic at R. Torre and Company (TORANI), a San Francisco-based company that produces flavoring syrups, sauces and blended drink bases. As a first shift mechanic he is responsible for the ‘pre-op and inspection of equipment prior to the production line starting.’  In addition he ‘troubleshoots any electrical and mechanical equipment problems and on occasion other facility issues.’

‘I enrolled in the Electromechanical Technician program to enhance my knowledge in Electronics and PLC’s; specifically electronic automation, sensors and controls. I am more confident in my ability to troubleshoot on the shop floor.’

‘Dwayne and Geet provided tutorial support with problems relating to practice exams, math equations and even submitting exams. I appreciated their quick response and help.’

‘I hope I can continue my studies on with the PLC II and Automation Technician programs.’  

Dayne Gellner is a Testing and Integration Technician at C-COM Satellite Systems where he builds, configures, tests, and repairs industrial satellite antennas. He registered into the Electromechanical Technician program to build on his knowledge of electrical and electronic systems and his credentials as a technician. "I liked how straightforward the program was to do-- it was just a matter of buckling down, studying, and taking tests. While my responsibilities have not changed since completing the program, I know it will help me find new opportunity whenever I decide to seek it.”

Thomas Velluet-Draper is an Automation Technician with Dragone, an entertainment company specializing in the creation of large scale theater shows. In this position he is responsible for the maintenance of the automated scenic elements and the performer flying systems within the show.

On the recommendation of a former colleague Thomas registered into the Electromechanical Technician program. He liked the programs’ flexibility, “how there was no time pressure to complete the program.” Since completing the program Thomas reports he has “a better understanding of the equipment I’m using, and expect that I will use the training to troubleshoot better.”

Anton Arkhipov is a Marine Mechanical Engineer based in Jakarta, Indonesia, who works off-shore on a maritime supply vessel. With a typical 2 month on/off rotation, Anton was able to work on the Electromechanical Technician program on board the ship and then take his online exams when he was on holiday. Given his unusual schedule Anton found the program gave him essential “flexibility and absolute freedom to study and take exams based on his own readiness”.

“I chose the Electromechanical program to enhance my skills and now that I have completed it I feel more confident in doing my daily work; in particular troubleshooting the ship’s propulsion system, ship power distribution systems, pumps, electro-motors, transformers , hydraulic power packs and vessel steering systems. Most of this equipment has complicated logic control schemes so it is very useful to understand how they actually work and to be able to troubleshoot them from simple earth fault to more complicated routines. The material covered in the program has also taught me how to resolve some of the electrical problems on board. This is especially practical and useful as we do not have an electrician on the ship.”

Brian Archer enrolled in the Electromechanical Technician program "to improve [his] skills, advance [his] career and get an apprenticeship at Modatek Systems, an automotive company." By completing the program, Brian has moved from production to a member of the pre-apprenticeship technical team. He "has applied a lot of what [he] learned to [his] job and is now responsible for the technical maintenance side of things rather than just being focused on the production side."

‘I liked the flexibility of being able to work at my own pace and the fact that I could reach someone in the resource center if I needed any help. They were there to help answer all my questions.’

Roger needed “a solid understanding of the fundamentals of Electronics to help in the creation of my interactive artwork” and found the Electronics Technician program was a perfect fit. 

“I was most attracted to the self-paced nature of the program. I am self-motivated and was able to schedule my time to work on the course material at a pace I was comfortable with.”

“The Student Forums were extremely helpful and I always reviewed the additional online material before attempting each Module. I was able to see the issues other students encountered and the solutions that were presented to them. .. I ran into very few problems by doing this.”

“I have learned quite a bit in program that will help me going forward and now plan on enrolling into the Electromechanical Technician program.”
